Just how does one determine the best room air purifier with so many brands out there? Well, the truth is there is no substitute for good research. Different brands have different advantages.
So what should you look for when conducting your ‘what is the best air purifier’ survey?

HEPA, a great technology - but watch out!

Some of the best room air purifiers conform to the HEPA standard.
Because of its reliability, HEPA technology has become the standard for filtration and purification in such environments as semi-conductor facilities, hospital operating rooms and such. Because of its success in this segment, it was adopted by room air purifier manufacturers.

Unfortunately for us consumers, most of these air purifier manufacturers’ claims of 99.97% filtration efficiency are entirely inaccurate. The impressive filtration rate pertains to the HEPA material used, and not the overall room air purifying effectiveness of the product.

Many air purifiers that claim to have HEPA filters have only about 80% filtration efficiency. This is because the HEPA filter is often damaged during the pleating process.
Other manufacturing processes can also affect the efficiency of the HEPA material. The fact is this - most room air purifier manufacturers do not state the actual efficiency of the product, and even less provide guarantees or are certified.
So when looking for the best rated HEPA air cleaners, always do a little research and be careful with the hype.

Gas filtration another issue

Another feature to be wary about is gas filtration. Some manufacturers, who supposedly make the best ionic air purifiers, state they remove gas pollutants with activated carbon. In its granular form, activated carbon is undoubtedly effective.
Unfortunately, many of the best rated air cleaners on the market today use only carbon fiber pads which contain only a few ounces of activated carbon, making them almost ineffective for removing gases and odors.
