Friedrich air cleaner review

Looking at a Friedrich air cleaner it is hard to fathom how the Friedrich Air Conditioning Co. started it’s 120 year long history with the fashioning of furniture from the horns of longhorn cattle, utilizing the curves of the horns to form chairs and settees, but believe or not, that’s one of the many products the company produced in it’s younger years.
Eventually the company got involved with refrigeration, and by the 1950’s had become one of the world's largest manufacturers of commercial refrigeration equipment. From there it was only a small step to manufacture Friedrich air cleaners – especially if you consider it’s earlier history!

The company is known for it’s emphasis on quality and energy conservation, so it should not come as a surprise that Friedrich air cleaners are considered to be one of the better air purifiers around.

Although Friedrich air cleaners are considered electronic air cleaners, they actually also employ other air cleaning technologies. The Friedrich C-90A uses a four step process to filter the air:

• the pre-filter catches the larger particles as room air is drawn through the rear grille,
• billions of microscopic particles then become electrically charged as they pass through a powerful electric field,
• collector plates immediately attract these "charged" particles, and
  finally, an activated carbon filter removes most common odors and fumes as the "clean air" is circulated back into the room.
• 
  The result is that the Friedriech air cleaner effectively removes odors, as well as all sizes of allergen: dust, pollen, pet dander etc.

The Friedrich C-90A has ample capacity to clean an area of some 465 square feet. The Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) – the amount of clean air provided measured in cubic feet per minute of operation – is also respectable: dust 325, smoke 300, pollen 370.

This Friedrich air cleaner is very quiet. Even on high speed, recommended for when smokers are around, it is pretty quiet.

The pre-filter and odor filter can be easily slid out of the Friedrich air cleaner for cleaning (pre-filter), or replacement (odor filter). The odor filter is inexpensive, but has to be replaced frequently.

There are some minus points attached to the Friedrich air cleaner that you have to be aware of though:

• It’s essential to take out the collector plates and put them in the dishwasher for a thorough cleaning – preferably on a weekly basis. If you don’t the performance will degrade very quickly indeed, and the collector plates will start to crackle and pop, like a bug zapper going off.
• The Friedrich C-90 could do with a better odor filter, it has to be replaced frequently to remain effective.
• The Friedriech air cleaner releases small amounts of ozone as a by-product of it’s ionizer, and although ozone is good for odor removal, some people are sensitive for ozone.
• Friedrich air cleaners are very functional, but they will never win a beauty contest. So if styling is a major issue, then you’d better look elsewhere.

All in all, the Friedrich air cleaner is a very versatile quality air purifier, and offers excellent value for money.
