Ozone pollution – what we can do about itIf you live in a big city you’ve seen it al to often when you’re
driving in to work on a warm summer’s day – smog – also known as
ozone pollution. Ozone pollution occurs when various substances react with sunlight acting as the mediator. The substances in question are nitrogen oxides, carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide or nitrogen oxides – the products of power plants, cars, and other fossil fuel combustion technologies. Ozone pollution is a problem, because ozone is actually a lung irritant, and people with asthma are particularly susceptible to it. So what can we do about ozone pollution? On a national level we should strive to minimize the use of fossil fuel combustion technologies, by starting to switch over to other more environmentally friendly technologies, and to intensify our research and development efforts. On a personal level we can try to limit ozone pollution by deciding to buy a more environmentally friendly car next time. In the short run all we can do is to install a car air purifier to remove most of the pollution – a wise move because studies have found that the pollution inside the car is worse than the one outside! |
