Use a car ionizer to remove that smell in your car!If you commute a lot and find yourself frequently in traffic jams, you’ll know what for smelly affair that can be – unless you use an car ionizer, or other type of car air purifier. Car ionizers emit negative ions that attach themselves to airborne particles, thereby changing their charge. These particles in turn attract other airborne particles, until they become too heavy and fall to the ground. Alternatively, the charged particles attach themselves to the car interior. Either way, you will be breathing less pollutants, or so the theory goes. There are some problems with car ionizers that you should be aware of though. Firstly, because the pollutants are charged, the American Lung Association believes particulates that have been ionized have a better chance of sticking to your respiratory system so their likelihood of being exhaled is low. Secondly, in the process of generating negative ions, car ionizers also emit ozone. Again, according to the American Lung Association “at higher concentrations, especially above 0.08 ppm, ozone is a potent irritant that can bring about diminished lung function, cough, inflammation associated with biochemical changes, and increased responsiveness to allergens.” In addition, they also say that “persons with asthma have increased susceptibility to ozone and exposure to low concentrations results in increased symptoms, medications use and hospitalizations.” There are car air purifiers on the market that use different technologies, providing a better solution than car ionizers. One such purifier is marketed by the allergy buyers club, and features three stage filtration:
