Are you sure you want an Alpine air purifier?

Alpine air purifiers, marketed by Alpine Industries/EcoQuest International, are sold under various brand names, the Living Air brand name being one of the best know. Alpine air purifiers are ozone generators, and are not recommended for the purification of air. Here’s why.

Various studies have concluded that ozone does not readily react with the pollutants it’s meant to destroy. As a matter of fact, the ozone generated by, say an Alpine air purifier, reacts very slowly with many indoor pollutants, sometimes it may even take months or years.

Ozone is a lung irritant, and when it reacts with other chemicals, it may produce even more harmful pollutants, such as aldehyde and formic acid, that can also irritate the lungs if sufficient amounts are produced.

In the past Alpine Industries has made claims that in court it has not been able to uphold, and the judgment forbids the company to make the following claims for their alpine air purifiers:

“.. that any Alpine product can eliminate, remove, clear or clean from indoor air any pollutant, contaminant, microorganism (including bacteria, viruses, mold and mildew), chemical or particulate, or any specific quantity or amount of any of the foregoing.”

Ozone is quite effective with the removal of smoke and odors, and the judgment allowed the company to claim that their Alpine air purifiers
“can remove ‘visible’ tobacco smoke and some odors (without specifying what odor)...”

The company is not allowed to make any health claims for it’s Alpine air purifiers either.
