How to improve indoor air qualityIf you live in a major city then you are all too much aware of the air pollution that is associated with large urbanized areas: smog, car exhaust fumes, the smell of industrial pollutants carried from many miles away. But what we often are not aware of, is the indoor air quality of the homes and offices that we spend so much time in. Because buildings are build more and more to keep pollution and noise outside, we end up with poor air quality on the inside. As we find that poor indoor air quality is more and more linked to the fast growing increase in asthma, other breathing problems, allergies, and other auto immune diseases, finding a solution has become a top priority. Unfortunately, because there are many factors that affect our indoor air quality, the problem is not easily solved, and requires a commitment on our behalf. Let’s have a look at what’s involved. Tobacco smoke is still the most common indoor pollutant, and we all know how to solve that one don’t we? So go to your doctor, or hook into one of the many support systems available, and leave this killer lying in the dust! Our indoor air quality is also greatly affected by all sorts of biological pollutants such as allergens produced by dust mites, pets and moulds. Dust mites and moulds thrive on humidity, so make sure there are no leaks and damp rooms. You can buy dehumidifiers filters to help you to fix this. Allergies due to pets can be relieved by keeping our animal friends outdoors as much as possible. Every house also has it’s own particular mix of airborne chemical pollutants. Some of the activities and appliances that impact our indoor air quality are: cooking, cleaning, wood-burning stoves, construction materials, paint, carpets, new furnishings and pesticides. In all the above cases proper ventilation of the house will help. Don’t worry if you are concerned about outdoor pollution - the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), has established that our indoor air quality is between 2 and 10 times more hazardous than the outdoors one! Finally, if you suffer from allergies, or asthma, consider purchasing a good quality air purifier – by alleviating symptoms it can greatly add to the quality of your life. |
