Ozone machines are bad for your health – find out if your air purifier is one

You see them advertized everywhere – touting all sorts of benefits, but in reality ozone machines, or ozone generators, are a health risk. Let’s be clear though, air purifiers that release trace amounts of ozone as a by-product are not the issue here. Rather, an ozone machine is an air purifier that uses ozone as the single method of cleaning the air.

Ozone machines produce so much ozone that they become a health hazard. Most of them use the corona discharge technology to generate ozone, and can be easily spotted because they give the air a bleach-like or metallic smell due to the nitric acid and nitric oxide produced. Both of these chemicals are strong lung irritants.

Are you still not sure whether you air purifier is an ozone machine? Then have a look at the Health Canada website:

It features a list of manufacturers, brand names, model numbers etc. that have been designated as being ozone machines.
