Is it really hayfever – what if it is just a cold?

Because cold, flu and hayfever symptoms are all so similar, it can be hard to be certain which one you’ve got. On one level, it doesn’t matter – whether or not it is hayfever, symptomatic relief may come from the same therapy, and in both cases your immune system will benefit from natural support.

However, it’s obviously worth knowing what it is that ails you, and there are a few indicators that set hayfever apart from cold or flu bugs.

Hayfever tends to last for several weeks, unlike a cold, which usually lasts seven to ten days. However, flu often lasts a few weeks too.

Hayfever tends to strike in warmer weather than colds or flu, and is usually more obviously seasonal – some people with an allergy to a specific pollen may find that they suffer hayfever symptoms in the same part of the same month year after year.

Hayfever can take longer to kick in than a cold or flu – often hayfever begins with a runny nose, and is followed by watery eyes several days later.
Colds and flu generally hit us with all their symptoms at once.

Flu tends to produce less sneezing than a cold or hayfever, and is less likely to include a sore throat. The flu is also much more likely to include muscular aches and headaches. Colds and flu are far more likely to include coughing than hayfever is.

Above all, hayfever tends to have a tell-tale ‘itchiness’ – even though a sore throat may also be present in the case of a cold, it tends to be less itchy and more hoarse than in cases of hayfever.
