Why do I get hayfever?

It can seem both strange and unfair that what amounts to a breath of fresh air for one person can be an irritating trigger of hayfever for the next. Hayfever is an unfortunate result of heightened sensitivity to specific airborne particles.

Which particles cause hayfever varies from person to person, but pollen, animal hair, mites, dust and mold spores are common triggers. When these substances trigger an allergic reaction, they are known as allergens. It’s not that the allergen itself is harmful; rather, the problem is that your immune system acts as though it were.

In other words, a reaction that makes perfect sense in fighting off an infection like a cold or flu is triggered by a non-infectious allergen.

This is why hayfever symptoms are so similar to colds and flu symptoms - in both cases your immune system releases histamines to attack the particle it identifies as a dangerous invader.
