Is the Surround Air XJ-2000 ionic air filter better than the Ionic Breeze?Surround Air manufacture two ionic air filter models – the
XJ-2000 and the XJ-2100. At prices of $79 and $99 each, these ionic air filters represent tremendous value, assuming of course that they are on par with their competitors - the Ionic Breeze Quadra and the Ionic Pro. The units are quite compact and have been designed to cover a maximum area of 500 square feet, with the optimum being between 250 to 350 square feet. It appears that Surround Air want to put their ionic air filters in the same class as their competitors – both rated at 500 square feet – but are hedging their bets by quoting a lower “optimum” coverage. Another concern is that both units supposedly produce more ions, but this might also mean increased levels of ozone – beyond that which would be useful for the removal of odors and smoke - and would become a health risk. Anecdotal evidence on epinions.com supports this. Another way the Surround Air ionic air filters differ, is that they are also air ionizers – particles are negatively ionized as the leave the unit and are attracted to other airborne pollutants. The particles clump together, become too heavy, and fall to the ground, where they are removed as part of the normal cleaning activities. It’s a valid technology, but some people are concerned about ionized particles getting stuck in our airways, and consider it a health risk. All things said, it’s undeniable that Surround Air’s ionic air filters are cheap, and if you are not too concerned about possible health risks, and limited coverage, then perhaps it’s worth a try – all the more so as the company has a 30-day money back guarantee in place. |
