Ionic Breeze air purifier review

The Sharp Image’s Ionic Breeze air purifiers have been considered by many consumers to be good value – as evidenced by a nationwide survey for owners of room air purifiers conducted by ACNielsen — the world's leading market research company.

The Ionic Breeze air purifier is a so called electrostatic precipitator type air purifier.
Contaminated air from the room is drawn in through the vents at the back of the unit. As the particles enter, they are electrically charged and are attracted to the oppositely charged collection blades inside. These charged particles will stick to the blades until wiped off by the user. This will have to be done every two weeks or so, otherwise the unit becomes far less effective.

Ionic Breeze air purifiers are easy to recommend, because they have plenty of nice features:

  • There are no expensive filters to replace that can cost you easily $60 or more. Over a five year period that would mean a saving of $300 dollars or more.
  • Ionic Breeze air purifiers use a unique technology to move the air with electrostatic forces, and therefore do not have a fan to move the air. This makes these air purifiers completely silent!
  • There are no moving parts, so Ionic Breeze air purifiers require minimal energy to run – depending on the model – either 28 or 10 watts. Because they are so cheap to run, it is economical to clean the air continuously. This highly recommended because indoor air pollution rapidly returns to the old levels when an air purifier is turned off.
  • All models can clean a 500 square feet area, have elegant styling, and are available in several colors.

The big question of course is whether Ionic Breeze air purifiers are any good at cleaning the indoor air – after all good looks are fine, but having clean air to relief that allergy or asthma is even better!

The Sharper Image claims that their basic model, the Quadra, can remove pollutants larger than one micron: larger bacteria, mold spores, pollen, dust, cat dander and other allergens.

This is pretty good, but many allergen are smaller than one micron.

The more expensive model, the Ionic Breeze GP, includes a germicidal UV lamp, which eliminates viruses, bacteria, and other micro organisms. Both models also generate trace amounts of ozone - well known for it’s ability to remove smoke and odors.

The GP is more expensive than the Quadra - $500 versus $350 at the time of this writing.

The extra money however, will give you a very versatile air purifier that compares very well indeed with it’s peers in the same price class.
