Find out why electronic air cleaners are such good valueElectronic air cleaners are a very popular way of cleaning the indoor air. And for a good reason, as electronic air cleaners have quite a few advantages over other types of air cleaner. No filters are used, which can be a significant cost saving, as HEPA filters can easily cost $100 or more. Lack of filters also means there is hardly any resistance to air flow, reducing energy requirements, and the electricity bill, significantly. Another great benefit is that electronic air cleaners are virtually noiseless. Electronic air cleaners, also known as electrostatic air cleaners or electrostatic precipitators, use no filters. Instead, the particulates first get charged when they pass over or through an electrical grid. These charged particles then are attracted by oppositely charged collector plates as they pass in between them. As the collector plates gradually become more dirty, they will become less efficient at attracting the oppositely charged particles. So it’s important to regularly clean the collector plates of your electronic air cleaner. Whereas HEPA filters are assured of trapping 99.7% of all particulates larger than 0.3 micron, with efficiency gradually dropping of for particles smaller than 0.3 micron, electronic air cleaners can potentially trap even smaller particulates such as viruses. Electronic air cleaners can not remove smoke, fumes and the like, and that’s why they are often combined with an activated charcoal filter, which does have that capability. Electronic air cleaners can also be installed in the duct work, giving you the benefits of a whole house air cleaner. |
