Electrostatic furnace filtersThere are many types of furnace filter around, all with different
cleaning ability: Pleated filters are of much better quality and will capture smaller particles such as spores and mold, pollen, human hair, pet dander, and lint, but most bacteria, viruses, and smoke are not removed. Electrostatic furnace filters contain electrostatically charged fibers that work like tiny magnets to capture up to 30 times more pollen, pet dander, smoke, dust and other allergens than standard fiberglass filters. However, electrostatic furnace filters do not remove odors and smoke. The best electrostatic furnace filters are almost as efficient as the better quality electronic air cleaners, which is pretty good news as they are significantly more expensive. Good quality electronic air cleaners can remove particles as small as 0.1 microns while a top of the line electrostatic furnace filter is effective down to 0.3 microns. If somebody in your household suffers from allergies or asthma, then you can really make good use of this cleaning capability. Simply run your HVAC system fan continuously – irrespective of whether it is summer or winter. The air in your home will keep circulating through the electrostatic furnace filter, and the indoor air gets cleaner and cleaner. Make sure that you replace the electrostatic filter every 2 to 3 months though. If you don’t the clogged filter will hamper airflow, affect heating ability, and may even damage the furnace. |
