Protect your HVAC with a 3M furnace filter and reduce your allergies

Who does not know 3M – a globally diversified technology company with a product offering including graphics, communications, health care and transportation? And chances are that if you check your furnace filter you will find that it has been installed with a 3M furnace filter.

Most furnace filters are designed to protect the blower motor and equipment in the furnace from dust, lint and the like.

However, with the right filter, such as a 3M furnace filter, you can also significantly improve indoor air quality by attracting and capturing pollen, pet dander, smoke and other tiny particles.

There are many types of furnace filter around:

  • Fiberglass filters, which are very cheap, but are designed solely to protect the blower motor and equipment in the furnace.
  • Pleated filters are of much better quality and will capture smaller particles such as spores and mold, pollen, human hair, pet dander, and lint, but most bacteria, viruses, and smoke are not removed.
  • Electrostatic filters contain electrostatically charged fibers that work like tiny magnets to capture up to 30 times more pollen, pet dander, smoke, dust and other allergens than standard fiberglass filters. However, they do not remove odors and smoke.

3M furnace filters are of the electrostatic variety, and they are almost as efficient as the better quality electronic air cleaners.

The best electronic air cleaners can capture particles as small as 0.1 microns while the top of the line 3M furnace filter is effective down to 0.3 microns.

If somebody in your household suffers from allergies or asthma, then you can really capitalize on the 3M furnace filter. Simply run your forced-air system fan continuously - not just during heating and cooling seasons.

As the air in your home re-circulates through the 3M furnace filter, the electrostatic fibers will attract and retain micro-particles that can aggravate allergies and irritate your respiratory system.

The air in your home is continually re-circulated through the filter, so it gets cleaner and cleaner.

One word of warning though, be sure to replace the 3M furnace filter on a regular basis – every 3 months for a furnace filter, and every 2 months for an air conditioner.
Otherwise, if you leave the filter in too long it can become clogged. This reduces the airflow, hampers the heater’s heating capability, and can even damage the furnace.
