Hunter manufactures two distinct lines of Hunter air purifiers – air purifiers that use conventional HEPA Hunter air filters, and their so called HEPAtech system.

The Hunter HEPAtech system does not employ HEPA Hunter air filters, rather it uses a combination of cleaning technologies to keep the indoor air clean. However, the HEPAtech system does use charcoal filters to absorb odors, and they have to be replaced regularly. Use of the charcoal filters is optional, so if you are not concerned about odors in the house then you will not have this recurring expense.

Hunter’s so called line of QuietFlow air purifiers are in reality air purifiers that use HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Arresting) filters, and these Hunter air filters have to be replaced regularly.

Some people claim that HEPA filters become more efficient with time, because they think that as the Hunter air filter fills up, it will be able to catch smaller and smaller particulates.

This is simply not the case because the way a these filters work is not by trapping a particle in between the fibers – like catching a fish in a net. Rather what happens, is that the air flow will slip around the fibers, but the particles can not change direction so quickly, and will hit the fibres and keep sticking to it.

The other thing to keep in mind is that as the Hunter filter fills up, it will start to release some of the caught particulates and reintroduce them back into the air. Further, HEPA filters tend to hold moisture in, which actually breeds mold and releases it back into the room.
