Living Air purifier review

The Living Air purifiers range is manufactured by Ecoquest - a 45 year old Fortune 500 company specializing in improving our indoor living conditions with air purifiers, water purifiers, and a range of personal care products such as vitamin supplements, herbals, lotions.

Ecoquest has various air purifiers in it’s range, the Living Air Classic being one of the best known.
With a claimed capacity to clean the air in an area of up to 3,000 square feet, the Living Air purifier can in theory keep several rooms free of pollutants.

The Living Air purifier uses several cleaning technologies:

• Prefilter – to remove hair, lint etc.
• Negative ion generator– ionized particles attach to other airborne particles, the larger particles become too heavy and float to the ground, where they are removed during normal cleaning activities.
• Ozone generator – sterilizes micro organisms and removes odors.

We would have preferred an electrostatic precipitator instead of the negative ion generator, as it is a far more effective cleaning technology.

It's important to be aware that ozone is a powerful lung irritant, and that's why the American Lung Association does not recommend the use of ozone generators.

Further, various studies have shown that ozone at levels safe for humans is not very effective at destroying micro organisms.  That's probably why the Living Air Classic manual states:

"To sanitize an approximately 12X12 area for mold, mildew, or bacteria, turn the unit on high for 3-4 hours.
Caution: Always be sure a room or area is UNOCCUPIED before performing the above described sanitizing procedure."

The Living Air purifier is priced around $700, quite steep, unless we take into account the machine’s supposed capacity to clean an area of up to 3,000 square feet.  Most manufacturers of similar air purifiers claim that their unit is only good for an area of up to 900 square feet.

So how good is the Living Air purifier? Most reviews on epinions.com are favorable, with many being impressed with it’s ability to remove odors, the smell of cigarette smoke, and - strangely enough - an improvement in their allergy or asthma condition.

Ecoquest has a warranty in place for either 1 or 3 years - depending on the model.
