Furnace filters can do more than protect the HVAC systemUntil recently furnace filters were used to protect the heating/air conditioning unit from dust and debris. The furnace filter, which usually sits just before the motor, traps the particles as the motor pulls in air through the cold air duct. New filter technologies now give us the option of also having the air in the housed cleaned to various degrees, depending on the type of furnace filter that is used. The most basic filter is the traditional fiberglass or polyester panel type filter. The filter is usually 1” thick and is only good for the removal of larger particles, such as lint and hair. Better are pleated filters. These furnace filters will capture smaller particles such as spores and mold, pollen, human hair, pet dander, and lint. However, most bacteria, viruses, and smoke are not trapped. And then there are electrostatic filters. Electrostatic air filters are charged by the air as it passes through the filter. The electrostatic charge helps to attract smaller particles than would be possible with a basic panel filter. Electrostatic air filters can also be found in the form of pleated filters, and in this combination is the most effective furnace filter. It is important to regularly clean or replace the furnace filter. If you don’t, a clogged furnace filter will cause a reduced air flow to the heat exchanger, and less heat is transferred out of the furnace. The feedback system will think there is ample heat and will turn off the furnace, even if the room still needs heat. |
