Electrostatic air filters explainedElectrostatic air filters are a type of furnace filter that are used to filter the air in a central heating or air conditioning unit. Electrostatic air filters can also be found as a pre-filter in room size air purifiers. These filters are in general good at removing dust, mold, and pollen, but are not good for the removal of smoke and pet dander. Electrostatic air filters are charged by the air as it passes through the filter. The electrostatic charge acts like a magnet to attract the smallest particles that flow through the filter. There are basically two types of electrostatic air filter – disposable, or permanent. The permanent electrostatic air filters need to be cleaned regularly, otherwise they quickly become less effective. Electrostatic air filters can also be found in the form of pleated filters, and in this combination are the most effective furnace filter, in your HVAC. Most electrostatic air filters are 1” thick, but some central heaters/air conditioning units accept pads up to 6” thick that are more effective. Before you purchase an electrostatic air filter, make sure that you know what the required size is, because it can vary among different models. If the required size can not be found in on the filter, or there is no filter in the unit, then you must measure the exact dimensions and subtract 3/8 inch from both the length and the width to establish what size filter to purchase. The 3/8 inch difference enables the filter to slide in the channels. |
